Louis Tomlinson's debut solo album is one of the most anticipated albums of 2018. We've rounded up all the details on what we know so far about Louis' album and tour.
When is the album coming out?
In 2017, Louis had given various percentages of how "done" the album was and it seemed like the album release would be imminent. As 2018 has progressed, we still don't yet have a release date, but Louis seems to be getting closer. Here's the month-to-month timeline of the album progress.
In the beginning of the 2018, Louis said he was getting in the studio again and seemed excited to get the album finished. He explained that he is a perfectionist so it was taking a little longer and that he had a few more songs to add. In late January, he seemed happy with where the album was going, saying, "Feeling really good about what I'm writing. Keeping that shit real and honest".
In February, Louis participated in the Secret Genius sessions for Spotify. Secret Genius is "a global initiative that will highlight the contribution songwriters and producers make to the music industry and artists’ careers." Louis also tweeted about doing more writing mid-month, saying, "I know it's taking longer than expected but it's gonna be worth it !"
When a fan asked if he planned to have the album out in the first half of the year, Louis responded, "It's what I'm aiming for :)"
A snippet was posted in February:
Louis continued to write in March, tweeting, "Good session today with good people !" Another snippet was posted, giving us a glimpse into the sounds that may be on Louis' album.
Louis won the iHeartRadio Solo Breakout Award without even having an album out yet! He thanked his fans for voting and said he was "over the moon" at having won the award.
In early April, Louis posted an update on the progress saying, "Monthly thank you for all your patience . Believe me we're getting close! Really excited about a couple of the new songs." He talked about how he had been working on the album for two years. In mid-April, Louis tweeted about getting some important meetings out of the way. "Got some important meetings out of the way and now I'm fucking ready! Your patience has been amazing, I'm working on rewarding it as soon as possible ! Together, let's do this !" He expressed that he had gotten a bit frustrated with the process but was "Time to start fucking winning now !"
Louis continued to write in May and at the end of May, he tweeted, "Miss you lot, I'm working my arse off. Proper update soon". On May 3, it was announced that Louis and his management team from James Grant Group had parted ways. Fans wondered if this would push back the album release date.
In June, Louis stressed that he was working hard. He also tweeted about how he was working out an overall plan for the year and beyond and that he would update everyone when it was in place. At the end of June, Louis tweeted that he almost had everything with his new management in place and that everything had been at a stand still while that was happening. He said, "I'm feeling really ambitious about what's to come! Thank you for sticking with me. It'll be worth it".
In July, news broke that Louis was going to appear on X Factor as one of the judges. Fans worried that his X Factor gig would affect the release date of the album. Louis made a video to reassure fans that the album release date would not be affected and that music was still his priority.
On July 19, Louis' new management team was announced. Louis signed with Mark Gillespie and Matt Vines for management. Mark Gillespie is the founder of LA-based Three Six Zero Group and Matt Vines of Seven 7 is TSZG’s former VP of Artist Management in the UK.
How many tracks?
There's no word on the exact number of tracks, but a fan asked if Louis would have more than 10 tracks and he said, "Defo ! Value for the money and all that". So fans can expect to get a big bang for their buck!
What's the title?
No news on a title yet. At one time, his songs all appeared to feature the word "you" (Back To You, Just Like You, Miss You) and fans speculated that "You" might be the album title. But, it's unclear if that's still a direction he's going in for the album. It looks like it will not be self-titled. Louis answered a question about whether he would have a self-titled debut album by saying, "Nope :)"
What's the cover look like?
No artwork has been released yet. It could feature the X-eyed smiley face that has been featured on what appears to be Louis' merchandise. Louis recently applied for a trademark on that symbol and one of the classes of use appears to be for recordings (such as CDs). One cover photo we can rule out is featured in the tweet below. A fan tweeted a screencap of Louis making a face during the Ask Anything chat suggesting Louis use it as an album cover and Louis replied, "Haha fuck off ! That made me laugh". On second thought, that's not exactly a "no"!
What will the songs be like?
Louis told Billboard last August that, "The album in general is just very honest and conversational. In the early sessions I've had, a lot of songwriters love to write about fairytales and situations that just don't really feel like the bands that I grew up listening to. They speak very matter-of-fact and honest, and I think that's cool and that's interesting. Although the fans know loads about me, they'll definitely learn a bit more after the album."
Louis tweeted some lyrics, "Took some time cos I've ran out of energy of playing someone I've heard I'm supposed to be". He's also posted some song snippets that may be on the album. You can hear all the snippets and tracks so far on our Debut Album page.
Throughout the year, Louis has been adamant that he'd like to tour and hoped to get on the road this year. However, with his recent X Factor duties taking up most of the fall/early winter through December, we now expect tour will be sometime in 2019.
Will there be Meet and Greets and how much will they cost?
In response to a fan who tweeted about how paying to meet a celebrity was pretty weird, Louis replied that he agreed to a certain extent. He didn't think it was a fair system. In a series of back and forth tweets, he seemed to suggest that he'd like to do some sort of competition for meet and greet tickets and/or find other ways to make it fair. Louis seems eager to find a way to do meet and greets when he does go on tour and promises, "When we announce the tour I will have found the most practical meet and greet solution"
Where will he go on tour?
No dates or venues have been announced yet, but one place Louis seems eager to go on tour is Hong Kong! The Hong Kong Tourism Board asked if he had any plans to tour there and Louis replied, "100%".
What can we expect from the staging of the tour?
Fans are curious as to what Louis' tour will look like. We've gotten glimpses of his live performances, which included bold graphics and lots of lights, but at this point, it's too soon to tell. One thing that is for sure is that Louis will be involved in every decision. Commenting on staging, he tweeted, "I'm involved in every step of the creative. You have to feel comfortable on stage!"
So, there you have it. That's all we know about Louis' album and tour at this moment. We're excited for what's coming and we hope you are, too!
