X Factor contestant Anthony Russell opened up to the Mirror, speaking about his battles with drug and alcohol addiction and how Louis Tomlinson encouraged him to go to rehab. Anthony said, “Louis is a godsend, I would be dead now if it was not for him. I think about it every day and pray for the kid every day, I owe him my life.”
Anthony competed in X Factor last year and was a favorite until he left the show due to his struggles with addiction. Louis had been a fan of Anthony’s during the show and privately reached out to him after he left, encouraging him to go to rehab.
After being fired from his job at Network Rail for showing up impaired, he took Louis’ offer of help and now with support from Louis, who he calls his “guardian angel,” AA meetings, and rehab, he has been sober for 10 months.
Anthony said: “I’m always going to be a recovering addict. Since rehab Louis has called me. He proper cares. I need to make him proud.”
Both Anthony and Louis were brought to tears when Louis told Anthony he’d pick him as one of his final four boys to go through to the the live shows (at 7:30 in this video).
Anthony had been concerned over his voice breaking during his judge’s house song, muttering “garbage” and “washout” after he performed, but Louis told him that one little note meant nothing to any of the judges. Nile Rodgers went on to tell a story of how David Bowie’s voice had broken on one note in Let’s Dance and he wanted to change it, but Nile had told him, “One bad note can sometimes feel like raw emotion.”
Louis has been busy at the X Factor house, attending rehearsals every day to make sure his boys are in top form. The live shows start this weekend. X Factor episodes air on ITV at 8:25 pm on Saturdays and 8 pm Sundays and on Sundays and Mondays at 8 pm on AXS in the US. Saturday’s show will be 2 hours long.
Super TV posted a list of song spoilers for Louis’ boys category with Anthony Russell singing Julia Michaels’ Issues, Armstrong Martins singing the 1D hit Story of My Life, Dalton Harris singing David Bowie’s Life on Mars, and Brendan Murray singing Ariana Grande’s Break Free.
Today, Louis tweeted, “Massive night tonight! Very excited for you all to hear what we’ve worked so hard on this week! #xfactor”
