Episode 1 opened with contestants wondering about the new judges, leading into the intros of Robbie Williams, Ayda Field, and of course, Louis Tomlinson.
First up was No Labels, a fairly weak four-piece boyband. Louis said, "Everything we've just seen was everything we tried to avoid in One Direction." Louis later asked if he was "too harsh".
Danny Tetley from Yorkshire was up next, earning an "oi, oi!" from Louis. His big personality and voice earned him a standing ovation from all the judges and hugs from Robbie, Ayda, and Louis. Louis said, "Us Yorkshiremen are known for wearing our hearts on our sleeve, right? And that whole performance - the passion that was pouring out of you- you should be really, really proud." He got a "massive, massive yes" and a "well done, lad" from Louis to move on to the next round.
Next up was a duo called Misunderstood. Louis commented they looked good. They sang an original song. Louis commented, "I'm not normally the biggest fan of dance, but a lot of the time it's not really executed as well as that. That was absolutely brilliant, boys, Well done." He later commented, "They were sick!" and that they were the first act that you'd be confident to sign them.
Kezia was a 15-year old. Louis commented on her good voice, but that she needs to find who she is and get more of an identity. She did make it through. Charlotte was a 17-year old from Doncaster (like Louis). "Do it for Donny!" Louis said as she was about to sing. As she was singing, Louis said to Simon, "Girl band?" Simon agreed. Molly was a 16-year old with an adorable Nana and a big voice. Louis said he was "at a little bit loss for words. That vocal you just delivered there - honestly, it was like watching a little Christina Aguilera. It was unbelievable." Louis commented that he wanted the Girls category after seeing her.
Ross Alexander was next with a spiffy intro, but not a great performance. "When you bring such a massive production and the way that you're dressed and the screens, we're expecting pure entertainment, really, and I just never really got there."
Olivia and her Elemental Dancers were next with a lackluster performance. Louis thanked them for coming but it was No's all around.
Janice Robinson was next from New Jersey. She wrote a song called Dreamer. She got the crowd on their feet. Louis said "that's an absolute banger."
Andy was a contestant who seemed a bit obsessed with Robbie. Robbie went on stage to sing Angels with him. Louis laughed and said "madness!" and Andy made it through.
In his debut as a judge, Louis consistently made thoughtful comments and tried to provide constructive criticism to the acts. Want to see more moments? Check out more Episode 1 videos and Episode 1 photos. Here's a video of Louis' moments from Episode 1.
