Before the show, Louis tweeted, “Massive night tonight! Very excited for you all to hear what we’ve worked so hard on this week! #xfactor”. When someone commented that the winner was definitely going to come from Louis’ boys category, Louis replied, “I think your’re right!”
Misunderstood opened the show doing an original number. “What an amazing way to start our live shows.” He congratulated them for going first and with an original. “It was a great, great performance.”
Anthony Russell was the first of Louis’ boys to sing. He sang Julia Michaels’ Issues, which he sang last year. In a different place this year after tackling his own “issues” it took on a whole new meaning.
Simon thought he should stand still under a spotlight for a song like that, but Louis disagreed and complimented him on getting his timing back when he lost it for a moment.
Danny went next. The announcer announced the wrong performer and Danny’s mic wasn’t fully up so he started again and did great. Louis said, “The pressure of what just happened…that you picked yourself up and kept going, that was great.”
Molly Scott was next singing Fake Love. Louis said, "For your age at 16, to do what you just did is incredible.” He wasn’t really sold on the creatives and the umbrellas they used in her performance.
Janice was next. “The creative was absolutely amazing.” He hadn’t been sure about the song at first, but really liked how she did it.
Brendan Murray singing Ariana Grande’s Break Free. Louis and Brendan discussed his previous experiences and disappointments in the boyband he was in before he auditioned for X Factor. Louis said, “I always knew who I didn’t want to be. You can then work your way backward…Find one song that really means something to you.” After his performance, Simon called it boring and Louis disagreed, saying “Oh, shut up!” to Simon and later, “Pipe down, Simon!”
Bella went next. Louis said, “It was a brilliant song choice.” He continued, “It was professional composed, I loved your lyrics as well. Well done.”
Armstrong Martins sang the 1D hit Story of My Life. Armstrong liked how strict and disciplined Louis was with him. Louis thought he could have a “moment” with the song.
Armstrong mixed with the song with a rap.
Even Simon liked the song. Louis said, “I know you do struggle with your nerves and you just came alive.” Louis told everyone to listen to his second verse.
Yo it’s good news, it ain’t in the Daily Mail,
Without Christ in me I would daily fail,
I got the great observer watching my back,
He’s my guardian so I stay on track,
Then I let them see that I reach out to the lost,
When I’m with the SPAC nation team I’m close to my dream,
I’m heading up there’s only 1D,
There’s a winner in the boys category!
Giovanni was next. He did a great performance of Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting. “You’ve toned it down. I was ready not to like it but i really enjoyed it.” He said he’s been talking to him and he’s a “lovely, lovely guy.”
United Vibe was next performing Slow Hands. Simon thought it was too staged. Louis said, “I think you are really likable boys. It felt too staged.” Louis talked about how they looked that they were thinking too much about crossing over the stage. “Don’t worry about that and just go in the moment. I want to see a little bit more of you loving each other.”
Shan was next singing Imagine. Robbie teased Simon saying it was nice of Simon to be there by phone (instead of in person).
Louis said, “Best vocal performance of the night.” He said it was brave to start off acapella on the first live show.
Ola was next with an original called Jiggle It he wrote 10 days ago. “You’re a lovely, lovely man. You are vitally important.” He talked about how every was waving their arms and enjoying the performance.
Scarlett was next with a strong performance of Natural Woman that got her a standing ovation from the judges. “You’re a very, very likable person. I was rooting for you before you even started singing. You should be proud of yourself.”
LMA Choir was next singing Circle of Life in what Simon called their “moment”. Louis said, “I’m not normally a massive fan of choirs but there’s something about your energy.”
A Star was next. Louis said, “I love you two as individuals. I was expecting a bit more street from you guys.”
Dalton Harris sang David Bowie’s Life on Mars. Louis advised him to really get lost in the moment. Louis said he was waiting for this moment “So i could show you off. You made me proud.”
